In an earlier shot I discussed my ambivalence about street photography/candid photography; specifically about the balance between individual privacy and documenting life as it is lived in the first part of the 21st-century. This one has a similar issue, but again I'm including it because there's something that I really like about it.

She is doing nothing more exotic than hanging out the washing. But the way in which she is doing it I find striking. She is dressed well, she has done her hair, and the washing is being organised in a systematic way. This is not the sort of thing that makes grand history, but to me there is a quiet dignity to it, and it is a snapshot of how she lives her life on a daily basis. 100 years from now, this will be the type of photo that is likely to resonate with a viewer more than any politician's acceptance speech when they win power, more than any Olympian winning a gold medal, more than any event that appears on the front page of a newspaper or its digital equivalent for a day.

I think the art of photography owes it to posterity to capture more of life as it is lived. I can't see myself ever becoming a street photographer as such, but I do need to do more like these, albeit with respect for the individuals in them at the forefront.
