The final building that we're going to look at in the Piazza dei Signori is the Palazzo del Capitano, aka the Palazzo di Cansignorio. The second name comes from the fact that it was apparently constructed by our dear friend Cansignorio, the moderate ruler who killed one brother and imprisoned another. It is believed to have been finished around 1363, and originally had three large towers at the corners. The remaining tower was hidden by a restoration shroud during our time there but can be made out on the right.
The first of the two names came from the time when Verona was under the control of the Republic of Venice. At that time it was chosen as (according to the sources that I have found) the Captain's residence.
Exactly what role the Captain had is less clear, though I imagine that he was the senior military officer in the city. As you can see from the image, it has fallen on hard times although a restoration project is currently being undertaken. What will be done with the building after that is completed is unclear.
