20160823_015474 The Halo Effect I

San Gimignano, Toscana, Italia

There is an old military saying; "You go to war with the army you've got, not the army you want". For photographers, the same is true of light. I did not want to be photographing this ancient stonework with the sun high in the sky. I wanted low, angled, warm light. And knew that I just wasn't going to be there to get it on this trip.

So I went to work with the light I had. In this case I did something that has worked for me before; put the light source just out of the corner to give a burst of light beaming onto the subject.

Much as I still love the stone colours and the blue of the sky was wonderful, because I've already done a few images along those lines this time I've gone for a B&W treatment. I brightened the yellows to highlight the stonework, but pushed the reds dark to preserve the details. I pushed blues a bit darker to take advantage of the part of the sky that was away from the sun to let the buildings stand out a bit more, but kept cyan about the same to keep the lightness of the sunny part of the sky. Greens and magentas I didn't touch from Photoshop's default values.

The right whites contrast beautifully with the shadows. Excellent detail in the beautiful masonry. Fantastic composition too. V
