I used a shot of this cathedral for my PESO gallery, taken from the front. For those who didn't see it, briefly summarise where this place was.
Heading north out of Roma en route to Tuscany, our first stop was Orvieto in the province of Umbria, which sits between Lazio (where Rome is) and Toscana (our destination and base for four nights).
Orvieto is a hilltop town as many medieval towns are, which is accessed by a very steep funicular railway.
Unfortunately it is also the place where there was some severe earthquakes only a couple of days at we pass through. As far as I know there wasn't any serious damage to Orvieto but there was to quite a few of the surrounding towns.
As I mentioned in my PESO commentary, I'm not really one for places of worship. However I cannot help but admire the amount of work, effort and craftsmanship that went into building a construction like this, especially considering how far up the building materials had to be hauled.
It was done without industrial equipment as well. The church was constructed between 1290 and 1591. (Though doubtless there has been work done on it since then as well.)
