20150625_008288 The Eternal Dragon (Thu 25 Jun)

Shrine Of Remembrance, Kings Domain, Melbourne, VIC

On the morning of the Thursday we caught a tram down to King's Park to see the Shrine Of Remembrance. Part shrine, part museum, it's definitely worth a visit.

Outside of the shrine is a monument to veterans of World War II. It consists of a Cenotaph, flagpoles, the forecourt... and the eternal flame, which we see here.

"Eternal" may be a bit optimistic since clearly at some point fuel will run out or the sun will explode or whatever, but it has been doing pretty well so far; it's claimed that the flame has burned continuously in its bronze bowl since it was lit by Queen Elizabeth II on her 1954 visit.

In this case the flame looks to me somewhat like a dragon, with right-facing snout and eye above flames which are shooting from the mouth, and a thin neck curving back to the left. Interestingly just as I started to shoot the flame someone with their eyes fixed on their mobile and oblivious to the world walked past on the other side. If you see the frames in sequence it's almost as if the flame transforms into a dragon and growls after her for spoiling its portrait. But maybe that's just too much imagination.
