After dropping the bags at the hotel we tried out our shiny new and incomprehensible Myki public transport tickets (which I now fully understand Victorians' antipathy towards) to hop a tram down the road to Carlton, Melbourne's little Italy and a place that you can put on 5kg by just being in.
First stop was Donnini's, server of traditional Italian fare. Seated in a window seat, we could watch the world go by as we had a refreshing water while waiting for some of the best bruschetta I've yet encountered, and I waited for my gnocchi. I'd had a pretty severe upset stomach for the preceding 48 hours (including despatches from both ends), which was not the greatest start to a foodie tour. Accordingly I had to keep it light and could only look on enviously at the tagliatelle and home-made ragu on the sampler plate opposite, though I was told that the tortelli di ricotta was the highlight of that plate.
