Elephant Rock (it looks like an elephant's trunk when seen from above, but not so much here) forms the left hand side of Loch Ard Gorge as you enter it. As you can imagine, in any kind of surf at all the pounding that you'd take against the rocks trying to get from the wreck site on the far side of Muttonbird Island (on the left) to the relative safety of the Gorge's beach (well to the right, and out of view here) would make your chances of survival somewhat slender.
