We headed west, past Cape Otway (a section of coast that juts out to the south, and the second most southern part of the mainland coastline) toward the Apostles. Along the way we stopped off at this lookout at Castle Cove.
This section of coastline, between Cape Otway (about 20km behind us to the east) and Port Fairy (about 150 km down the road to the west) was known as the "Shipwreck Coast" in the days of sail. In the century from the 1830's some 200 ships were lost along this coast due to a combination of fogs, hidden reefs... and the kinds of strong winds that we encountered probably didn't help either. Although in some cases it is rumoured that foul play played a part; in others it was just down to bad seamanship.
