18217 10:16 Day 2 - Tick Tock

Cook's Cottage, Fitzroy Gardens, Melbourne

I'm very much of the digital age. Although I do have one watch which features an analogue display, for years I didn't; and the one that I do have has a digital display below it. I'm also a fervent believer in the 24 hour clock, and use that pretty much exclusively in my work.

That having been said, they certainly didn't have the option of a panel of digital clocks showing the times in various parts of the world across the top of their desktops in the 18th Century. Indeed, they didn't have desktops. Or monitors. Or digital cameras. Or even film cameras! The horror, the horror!

But I digress. This is the type of clock that would doubtless be found in many upper-middle class households of the time. Whether such a clock graced the home of Mr. Cook is anyone's guess. (Though I'd bet that it wasn't this one if they did. S. Dalton is presumably Samuel Dalton, who was active in clock making in Warwickshire between 1786 and 1810. That was several years after Captain Cook died at the age of 50, and some 30 years after the house was built. I don't know exactly when Cook's parents died, but I'd be surprised if they outlived him by that many years given life expectancies of the time.)

This clock is located in the dining area on the ground floor of the cottage.
