The Fairies' Tree is the stump of an old Red River Gum tree, the type which would have been native to this area before the creation of the gardens. It was carved by the children's book author Ola Cohn between 1931 and 1934. According to the attached plaque it's for those who "understand how necessary it is to have a Fairy sanctuary - a place that is sacred and safe as a home should be to all living creatures".
Which, yes, OK, point taken, but... some of the carvings strike me as being a tad scary and not safe and sacred at all. Such as elves trapped in a spider web, to give one example.
