This sculpture was commissioned from Steven Holland in 2009 to commemorate animals which have served alongside Australians in all conflicts, including horses, camels, donkeys, dogs and pigeons.
The horse's head is in fact recycled; it was the last remaining fragment of a memorial created by Charles Web Gilbert for the Desert Mounted Corps. The memorial stood in Port Said Egypt until it was destroyed in the Suez Crisis of 1956.
I think, perhaps, that the fact that the horse's head is blown open is more than a little symbolic and intentional.
