091231_095606_4141 Brisbane's Bridge, Again (Thu 31 Dec 09)

Australian War Memorial, Campbell (Canberra), ACT

The bridge of the former HMAS Brisbane, a Charles F Adams class destroyer. The Brisbane was in service from 1966 to 2001, and (most of her) was sunk as a dive wreck off the coast of Queensland in 2005.

I'm not sure how the scuba divers who go down there feel about diving on a wreck which has no bridge, but they're probably too busy fending off the sharks which are trying to eat them to notice.

It's a pure coincidence (but certainly a curious one) that this image was shot #4141 from my 40D given that the Brisbane was DDG 41.

Given that I was sick of getting blown out pure white skies, I used a circular polarising filter on this image.

Update 11 Aug 2024: Yes indeed this is (the former) Brisbane's bridge. I made mention of it a year and a half earlier than this in image 080705_112534_2170, which I updated the commentary on yesterday. See that image for more details about the Brisbane, including the potentially confusing fact that the (now) current HMAS Brisbane, which would not even be laid down for more than 4 years after this shot was taken, is also DDG41.

Of course in December of 2009, I probably had no recollection at all of what shots I had taken in July of 2008, which is how we end up with another shot here.

(But to be fair, the "4141" frame number was pretty irresistible.)
