This lake is located on Tianshan or Heavenly Mountain range, which is also referred in a popular martial arts novel. Kunlunshan, a mountain range in the southern part of Xinjiang and Qinghai, is located to the south. Urumqi is situated in the basin between these two mountain ranges.
