Gromets were used for many reasons. They allow you to use the poncho in many ways besides just over your person. You can tie it to things, tack it to the ground and even tie them together to make a shelter much as you would a dog Tent. I have played around with tieing it to it self and making it into a kind of sleeping bag. This only works for small people though.
