The Sixth Day of our Tour: The Cliffs of Maher, Galway, and "Trad on the Prom"
+ On Sunday, September 18, 2022, we enjoyed the Cliffs of Maher with enough time for me to walk along the cliffs for around 2 hours which allowed me to take entirely too many photos. Believe me, 2 or 3 photos of the fabulous Cliffs of Maher are not enough to offer a complete picture.
Near the Cliffs of Maher there is a monument remembering the Great Hunger, the potato famine. We stopped and I took a couple of photos but this one is better > https://www.davewalshphoto.com/image/I000069iAz9wWezs
Our tour guide, Sally, is a lot of fun, well organized and very knowlegeable about Ireland, her home country. The history can make you pretty mad at the English but she says the relations are pretty good now. It is obvious that the similarities are significant including particularly a common language although Gaelic is trying to make a comeback. The English dominated Ireland for 7 centuries and were varying degrees of oppressive during most of that time. Most of Ireland became independent in 1922. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. Many in Ireland would like it to become part of the Republic of Ireland.
That evening we went to a "Trad on the Prom" show which is a real Galway treat. The musicians and dancers are well known as some of the best of Ireland including several prominent musicians and dancers of Riverdance and Lord of the Dance. If you like Irish music and dance, you will probably enjoy this "Trad on the Prom" performance > https://youtu.be/87-WoHZ-IJo
