The Fifth Day of our Tour: Newcastle West, Adair and Limerick
+ On Saturday, September 17, 2022, we stopped at 2 lovely country towns between Killarney and Limerick. In Newcastle West we toured a castle which is in the midst of restoration. In Adair -- https://adarevillage.com/ -- we visited the Holy Trinity Abbey Church which is one of the few old churches in Ireland which is now Roman Catholic rather than the Anglican Church of Ireland. Sally told me the Irish are not discontent with many of the older churches still Anglican (Church of Ireland). Once the Irish were allowed to practice their Catholic religion again around 200 years ago they began building churches and they like their newer churches. We enjoyed the beautiful park across the street.
We spent the afternoon and evening at Bunratty Castle and Folk Park -- https://www.bunrattycastle.ie/ . The Folk Park was a delightful glimpse into Ireland's past. Many old buildings have been taken to the sight. A distinct memory now is the aroma of burning peat. Peat has been a major source of fuel in Ireland for centuries. At the castle we went to a medieval style banquet with costumed servers who entertained us as well with excellent singing. We only had a knife to eat everything. The feast began with a vegetable soup in a bowl we could pick up and drink followed by bar-b-q pork ribs which came with a little bowl of water and herbs so we could wash our hands. We thought that was the main course but then we got a plate of chicken, boiled potatoes and vegetables which you could pick up with your hands. There were pitchers of wine, red or white. Mead was served too. And pastries for dessert. The banquet hall had centuries old Flemish tapestries hanging on the walls.
