+ This idyllic village was our home base during our first four days in Wales. It is the gateway village for the Snowdonia National Park, a rugged part of Britain and home to the highest peak in Wales and England. We stayed at the Royal Oak Hotel, a wonderful historic hotel with comfortable lodging and great cuisine and hospitality. Two rivers run through the village. The old stone bridge is called Pont-y-Pair and crosses over the Afon Llugway (pronounce Sugway). The Afon Llugway ends just North of the Pont-y-Pair when it reaches the River Conwy. A short walk from town leads to an old church, St. Michaels, which is associated with the name of the town: a chapel in the trees (or forest). It was a place for sacred gathering in pre-Christian Wales. Just beyond St. Michael's is access to the pedestrian suspension bridge over the River Conwy.
