Ivory carvers from Uelen visited Kotzebue and demonstrated their superbe artisitic talent. They are well-known throughout Russia for their traditional Eskimo art. In the photo they are at the Nikaichuat School, operated by the Kotzebue IRA to start kids out speaking Inupiaq. Local people in the foto include Andrea Greene, center front, and Martha Whiting, second from the right. Martha is now NW Arctic Borough mayor.
