Dennis Banks speaks in Portland

Downtown Portland

I shot this in about 1975 in Portland. Banks was visiting Portland in support of a group of Indians living on the Columbia River who were battling for their treaty fishing rights. There were a bunch of smug pro-bono lawyers hanging around. I recall Banks telling a couple of jokes that were quite funny, and also commenting on theories of Indians coming to America: "We're right here where the creator put us," he said. "If there were tracks across the Bering Straits, they were going the other way."
