Kivalina is built on a slim sliver of land. In the old days the people would pick up and move when a site became inconvenient for living. But today there's the Post Office, the school, and all the installed facilities of modern life. So moving is not so easy. Sites have been suggested not far away, but it's tough to agree on a new site for the town. The cost of the war and the diminished clout of Alaska's politicians in Washington also are going to make it tough to get funding.
