Threshing

Casablanca

In a way, war is a form of tourism. When I started sending photos from the war in Yugoslavia to Black Star Ahn Stack, the picture editor, said sarcastically "nobody's looking for tourist photos." I admit my war pictures weren't much, but I didn't appreciate her attitude....well this "tourist photo" by my father tells a lot. With German and Allied armies operating in the area for over two years, these local people are still able to plant and harvest crops. In a time before the UN and the numerous NGOs which feed civilians trapped in the conflict, agricultural continuity is a blessing. The alternative is often starvation.
