Being British

The Tunnel Road, Central Bosnia

Can you image an American tank standing patiently by while a reporter from America's National Public Radio does a stand-up? Wouldn't happen! The British are able to cooperate and put up with each other's differences. Americans, like some third world tribe, are constantly bickering. This was shot on a remote stretch of road between Gornji Vakuf and Travnik. Martin Bell is the reporter, a truly inspirational journalist. The cameraman is Sebastian, whose last name shall come to me in a moment.

Actually that isn't Miss Piggy, which was so called by the BBC crews because it weighed 4.5 tons and was a pig to drive. The Land Rover behind Martin in this shot is Miss Piggy's lighter cousin, which we dubbed Piglet. Note that the armour only surrounds the cab. We had another similar which was briefly called Winnie the Pooh. After that we gave up giving the cars names. The cameraman is indeed Sebastian Rich, who had spent much of his career with ITN. But by this time he was freelancing, so was on an assignment with the BBC in central Bosnia. It is almost certain Martin had his Willie Nelson tapes with him whatever car he was driving.

I believe the BBC called the armoured landrover 'Miss Piggy'. A Warrior armoured infantry fighting vehicle from C Coy 1 PWO in the background.

The TV Cameraman is Sebastian Rich of ITN.
