From the engineers' platform

Marin County, Ca.

Anybody who is a fan of the Golden Gate Bridge needs to visit the spot from which I took this photo. While roaming the hillside above the bridge looking for a good vantage point, I came across a dirt platform which was overgrown with vegetation. It was a perfect spot to set up the tripod. Later on I was looking through a book of Peter Stackpole's pictures from the construction of the bridge and saw that the engineers building the bridge were situated on a wooden platform built on top of the dirt platform. They had their theodolites and transits and looked very serious. The view from here is spectacular. I got there on my mountain bike by riding up Marincello Vehicle road from Conzelman Rd....watch out for cougars.

There was a cougar with a cub on the lower part of the Marincello vehicle road near the old army barracks. I called the rangers at the Park Service and after five minutes of denial they admitted there was a cougar there and they begged and pleaded that I not tell anybody. This was in the late 80s, so I guess it's OK to mention it now. Lots of deer around there, also continuous forest all the way to Alaska for the cat that wants to roam.
