Dubrovnik apartment

Dubrovnik, Croatia

The shelling of Dubrovnik was militarily pointless, but so was the whole war, for that matter. The Serbs continued to shell the ancient city long after the fighting in the area ended. Why? Because they had the guns. When the alarm sounded some people would go into the shelters, but many stayed in their apartments. The woman who lived in this nicely furnished place in the center of the old city was in the kitchen talking on the phone to her sister when an artillery shell landed in the living room. She was unhurt. Her sister, still on the phone, asked "what was that?"
