The mission at San Juan Bautista celebrates the winter solstice. The mission, best known for its role in Hitchcock's film Vertigo, is a beautiful and well-preserved example of a California mission. The church was built to feature the solstice. At sunrise sunbeams from a high window fall exactly on the altar. The Franciscan's built the church in this way in recognition of the local Indians' reverence for the solstice. In the photo, the statue of an Indian invokes the sun.
