My grandfather was a sapper in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in World War I
He was given a 160-acre Prairie Land Grant in Saskatchewan after the war.
He sold his and moved to New England because my grandmother was a U.S. citizen.
Or so she thought… Because my grandfather swore an oath
to the Crown of England to serve in the CEF, she as the wife did too!
Though born in the U.S. she became Canadian with his oath and service.
She had to re-naturalize to regain her U.S. citizenship and never forgave him for that.
I have very deep roots in Canada and could have been born a Canadian.
My ancestors crossed the border back and forth at will, mostly, to fight in wars depending
on what they believed in whether it was loyalty or rebellion.
