I was down at a place that ’s now officially called Dungeness Landing
but to anyone who has been around here for awhile knows it as The Oyster House.
I stopped here to survey the land and waterscape hunting for a photo opp and noticed this relic.
Back in the day… (Always wanted to write that into something)
The Oyster House was on a ramshackle pier along Dungeness Bay across from Graveyard Spit.
It had an even more ramshackle building on it that was the shucking house and store front.
We used to go down there and get a gallon of “cuts” for oyster stew
or OMG! Just good old raw oyster gulping.
“Cuts” are oysters that are damaged while shucking and were cheap.
One day some government official noticed how ramshackle all this was and shut it down.
They were suddenly worried it would all collapse into the bay and with good reason.
About the same time water quality became an issue so the business sold out to the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe.
The county took control of the boat ramp area and made it a county park.
The Tribe just recently, after decades, announced they are going to reseed oysters in Dungeness Bay!
Anyway! No matter what they name it for anyone who’s been here awhile,
we still call it The Oyster House even though it’s been gone a long time.
Someday the county or tribe will paint it over this and it will truly just be a memory.
(In less than a year of taking and posting this pic... It's gone!)
