19th September

I didn't just go and watch the cyclists race up the serpentine yesterday,
I also took advantage of the 'Doors Open' event and got a guided tour round the Pavilion.

Sadly the A-listed 1938 art deco building is in a bit of a state at the moment
as you can see in a few of the other pics but it's set to be restored soon
and the guides for the tours were from the architects set to do it!

Let me know when it finally gets a makeover - I may just have to travel up!

It was designed in the 1930s, and the style is distinctly and unmistakably Art Deco. Anyone that tries to argue for the other styles is just trying to look clever and impress others - and failing miserably.

Dare I say it is wonderful to see the pics (those drapes were hanging last time I was through the door, in 2003), and know that its refurbishment is assured - but this comes at the same time the papers tell us that the Winter Gardens may be under threat, as tourism funding is set to be culled.

You say Art Deco. Some others say it's Bauhaus. Others again call it International Modernist. I don't know which it is, but I hope the architects can find a way of preserving it and giving it a new purpose for the 21st century. Not easy. But a great gallery.

Compared to us in New Orleans, it looks great. Be sure to take photos of the work and the after shots, too.

It loks not too bad from the front but when you go round the sides and behind it boy does it look in need of repair.
I can remember when down stairs had amusements and prize bingo. You were probable not even born then Zak
