The development of the Gardens commenced in 1988 with State Forests of NSW providing the 42ha site immediately below Deep Creek Dam in Mogo State Forest. The Visitors Centre, display gardens and much of the infrastructure is on this cleared area. Tracks have been developed ont eh remaining 32ha to give access to the natural features of this site.
Bushfires in January 1994 caused significant damage to the Gardens. However development continued and the Gardens was officially opened on 1 September, 2001.
