Strathalbyn was founded by moneyed people who came from Scotland in 1839
and chose the Angas Valley area as a Special Survey. The best land was
purchased and the town gazetted in this picturesque spot on the river with
Col. James Dawson and William Rankine as Trustees for the sale of the blocks.
The unusual name probably derives from "Strath" a valley and "Alben", the old name
for Scotland. the Council heritage committee carefully monitors any development
to preserve the delightful river environment. Here we have a plaque commemorating
the updating of the old Railway Station for use as an Information Centre.
