Milwaukee is the largest city in Wisconsin and still has only about half a million people. Originally a brewing and manufacturing center, today it is making great strides to portray a friendly, hip outlook. The Milwaukee Art Museum recently gained international fame, with the construction of the new white concrete Quadracci Pavilion, designed by Santiago Calatrava. The structure contains a moveable, wing-like brise soleil which opens up for a wingspan of 217 feet during the day, folding over the tall, arched structure at night. The building has since become a symbol for the city of Milwaukee. Calatrava is currently designing the future train station - World Trade Center Transportation Hub - at Ground Zero in New York City. He is also building the Chicago Spire right opposite the Lake Point Tower on Lake Shore drive.

Milwaukee is less than two hours from Chicago, and is a great weekend getaway from the city. Start early and head North on I-94. Look for signs to the Lakefront as you enter and it will lead you straight to the Museum. Parking at the museum is usually cheaper than the neighboring lots. Next to the Calatrava masterpiece is the Discovery center and a man made path into Lake Michigan. Enjoy the stroll and then head in to downtown Milwaukee for lunch. There are lots of nice restaurants in the neighborhood. Milwaukee has numerous festivals through the summer so keep an eye out for those. One of the largest music festivals - The Summerfest - occurs here. As the afternoon starts to fade head to Bradford Beach and spend a relaxing afternoon in the waters of the lake. You can also check out the Harley Museum and Miller Brewing factory. If you like architecture the Basilica of St.Josaphat on 6th street is a must.

Milwaukee is a great blend of the industrial and artistic America.
