Galveston, Texas

Named for Bernardo de Gálvez, a Spanish colonial governor and general, Galveston has 32 miles of
beaches. Though constantly hit by hurricanes, Galveston maintains its serenity. It's 45 minutes from
Houston and though NASA is on the way, I hear it's better to just head on straight to Galveston. A
paradise for kids, it also I found has lots to offer for us nearing 30. The beaches are crowded but
clean and the restaurants are tasty. Galveston also one of the most historic districts in the US with many buildings from the 19th century.

To prevent a natural disaster from devastating the island again, the city built a seawall seven
miles long and 17 feet high and began a tremendous project to raise the level of the island.
Galveston’s seawall now extends 54,790 feet, and covers one-third of Galveston’s Gulf side.
Galveston also has a flight museum, a water theme park and is home to Moody Gardens, a fun theme
park with an aquarium, a rainforest park, an imax and a 4d cinema. The Island ferry 'The Colonel'
also docks there.

If you are in Houston and have a weekend, head on down to this simple island.
