Umayalpuram is a village on the banks of the river Cauvery in the Thanjavur district. The village is only 2 km from Swamimalai and about 10 km from Kumbakonam. The main employment in the village is farming and thus the waters of the Cauvery river is most important to this village. Umayalpuram K Shivaraman, a 'Sangita Kalanidhi', one of the foremost mridangam players is from here.

It is also the home of Krishna Bagavathar and Sundara Bagavathar, disciples of the saint composer Tyagaraja. It is they who saw to it that the building of the saint's samadhi at Tiruvaiyaru was renovated and the annual commemorative rituals performed there for 52 long years. Umayalpuram went on to produce some of the great musical geniuses like Kodandarama Iyer, Panchapakesa Iyer, and Narayana Iyer who played the ghatam.

Annually a Sita Kalyanam Mahotsavam is conducted with great devotion and piety at Umayalpuram Sri Rama Mandiram during the month of July. This annual function is attended by many stalwarts in the field of music and dance. Over the last 4 years the festival has become a “must attend” on the calendar of an increasing number of devotees and performers. It is said that even the earth one walks upon in this village produces music.

My father-in-law Mr A.srinivasan belonged to this village. He worked in AIR and their family moved away from the village because his father worked in the railways. His father was Mr Aiyyaswamy aiyer. Later after moving from Umayalpuram, they lived in Kumbakonam. My father-in-law's grandpa was named Mr Narayanan. They are vadamal Tamil brahmin Iyers. Karthik, Though I havent visited the village belonging to my inlaws, plan to do it some day. The photos are very beautiful. Thanks. My father is from this village. My grandfather (Late) UR Venkatrama Iyer was from East Street Agraharam. I visit the village occasionally. The annual Seetha Kalyanam is conducted at Bajanai Madam and is the tireless efforts of (Late) Pattabiraman and his family members. He passed away two years ago. Umayalpuram has produced many Chartered Accountants. Sri.Kasi Viswanathan is one among them. He is my cousin. Two very famous temples are situated at Umayalpuram - one is the Sivan Kovil and the other is the Rajagopala Swami temple. Sri.Raman, Trustee of the Umayalpuram High School Assn., has tirelessly worked to develop the Umayalpuram High School. The school produces 100 % results in the SSLC and HSC exams. Every one is invited to the Seetha Kalyanam celebrations which is held in a very grand manner. I am very proud of my ancestral village. Dear Mr. Karthick, Hats off to you and to your team. I am U.B. Kasiviswanathan also known as Babu who had stayed in Umayalpuram from 1967 to 1989. Myself, my younger brother B. Subramanian alias Mani and my two elders Mrs. Savithri Srinivasan alias Swarna and Mrs. Padmavathi Kunchithapatham alais Pathu also studied in the same school, The High School, Umayalpuram. All my ancestors belong to Umayalpuram. We are all students Mrs. TP. Sankaran, Head Master and Mr. Seetharaman and Mr. Ramakrishnan. I learnt Vishushasranam and Rudram from Shri. Swaminatha Ganabatigal.Mr. B. Ravichandran (Eastg Street) Mr. K. Sundara Ganesan (Recently Retired from ISRO Bangalore), Mr. Ramakrishnan (Ramanujapuram) Mr.S. Mallikarjunan and Mr. C.S. Natarajan (both brothers from South Street) are my class mates. Kavalkaran Pilliyar Koil located at the entrance of Umayalpuram is believed to be built by Lord Rama and Lakshmana during Jadayu Moksha. Further Umayalpuram has produced many distinguished persons. Justice Ramasamy Iyer, of Supreme Court New Delhi is native of Umayalpuram and Justice Naganatha Iyer, Distsrict Judge during Engilish Rule also belonged to Umayalpuram. And Mr. Sivaraman also known as Kulandai Sivaraman was famous Engineer in Chennai was from Umayalpuram. He had only built the first Kalyana Mandapam with Lift facility in Kumbakonam City. Dear Abhimanyu Panju, I am Mani, native of Umayalpuram son of your father's uncle. My father settled at Umayalpuram after retirement. I and my brother stayed at Umayalpuram till our college studies. I am in Hyderbad and settled here. We remember him. We used to come to your house at chennai when we were kids. Hope you are in Chennai. Dear All natives of Umayalpuram. My father was also from Umayalpuram...He left the village maybe in the year 1932 (not too sure)and had come to Chennai to become a very famous Film Director. He had directed over 60 films in those days with his partner under the banner "KRISHNAN PANJU".They are the ones who directed SIVAJI GANESAN'S first Film..namely "Parashakthi". Does any of your father / mother or grandparents remember him.His actual name is PANJAPEKESAN. He passed away in the year 1984 at Chennai.I am now trying to locate the street and house where he used to live .His father's name is Mr. SUBRAMANIAM and his mother's name is "SUBBULAKHSMI". Hi,I am sri from Umayalpuram and also i am proud about my village.From my childhood i know all the places of umayalpuram.Now a lot of new temples are constructed in our village and some temples are rebuilded and some is in progress.I can see a good development in our village over last ten years because of the well managed village panchayat.

Karthik, I saw your photos only today. they are pretty good & bring the life of our village. Incidentally The Sri Rama Mandhir Or Bajanai Madam belongs to our family & since last few 4 years we are celebrating a day of Music concert in Memory of the Great Brothers.along with Sita Rama Kalyanam. This madam has been there since 1910, during the time of my grand father. It was renovated 4 years back with the support of all devotees & full support of the villagers.
