Palm Trees and Brinjal Fields, Umayalpuram,Tamil Nadu

view map

Umayalpuram is a village on the banks of the river Cauvery in the Thanjavur district. The village is only 2 km from Swamimalai and about 10 km from Kumbakonam. The main employment in the village is farming and thus the waters of the Cauvery river is most important to this village. Umayalpuram K Shivaraman, a 'Sangita Kalanidhi', one of the foremost mridangam players is from here.

We visited the village on our way from Kumbakonam to Trichy. We had lunch with friends who stay in the village and it was most sumptuous. They arranged for us to go to the Cauvery river and see the farms and fields that survive on the water from the river.
