Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego is a large island separated from the South American
continent by the Straits of Magellan. The island is divided in half between Chile on the West
and Argentina on the East.
The small piece of land extending East of the Eastern tip of Tierra del Fuego is called
Isla de los Estados, or Staten Island -- named by a Dutch explorer after
the same "States General," or the United Provinces of Netherlands, as its better known
namesake in New York.
