1950 Chevrolet Two Door Hardtop. Chevy's first pillarless two-door hardtop. It was called the "Bel Air". "Bel Air" didn't become Chevy's top of the line series name until 1953. In 1950 it was only used to identify the new hardtop. The year before this popular body style had been introduced by GM at Buick as the "Riviera", at Oldsmobile as the "Holiday Coupe'", and at Cadillac as the "Coupe DeVille". Chevy and Pontiac didn't get their first hardtops until the 1950 model year. Pontiac's hardtop was called the "Catalina". GM would use all of these names over and over to identify a model series, or a specialty car, as in the case of Buick, who in 1963 named their new specialty luxury coupe "Riviera".
