Tokushima and Naruto 徳島と鳴門

Once the principal city and castle town of Awa Province, Tokushima is today the capital of Tokushima Prefecture. Much celebrated for its summer dance festival, the Awa Odori, the city is largely a modern commercial and industrial center, though it serves as a frequent gateway to Shikoku from mainland Japan. Little of its old castle remains, though its former splendor is detailed in the Tokushima Castle Museum in the city's central park.

Nearby Naruto is the first city encountered upon arriving in Shikoku via the Akashi Kaikyō and Awaji-shima highway. A small port and industrial city, Naruto punches above its weight in the tourism department as the base for visiting the Naruto Whirlpools - a fascinating natural phenomenon resulting from the tidal changes between the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
