Ōzu and Uchiko 大洲と内子

A pair of small towns southwest of Matsuyama in Ehime-ken, Ōzu and Uchiko mark the edge of the more heavily-settled north of the prefecture and its more wild, remote southwest. A former castle town, Ōzu is now a relaxed, picturesque city notable for its newly-restored castle (done using traditional methods), summer cormorant fishing, and backstreets of historic houses. Uchiko is a former center for the production of vegetable wax, and is now best known for its successful and ongoing historic preservation efforts, most notable on its long street of Yōkaichi.
