Serbia's northernmost major city and the second largest in the formerly autonomous region of Vojvodina, with an architectural landscape much in line with Central Europe. Secessionist (Hungarian Art Nouveau) buildings dominate much of the old core, most notably the grand old synagogue and distinctive town hall. Once known as Szabadka in the kingdom of Hungary, the city retains a cosmopolitan population with a noticeable Hungarian relative majority.

Sadly, the stately, monumental theater pictured below - dating from 1854 - was demolished to huge public outcry in November of 2007, leaving a giant gap in the town center.
