Shimonoseki 下関

A historic city at the southwestern tip of Honshū, Shimonoseki mans the northern side of the Kanmon Straits separating it from Kyūshū. Site of the highly significant Battle of Dan-no-ura during the Genpei War in the late 12th century, the city is best known today for fugu - the notorious and potentially lethal pufferfish considered a Japanese delicacy. The later pictures in this gallery are from the old castle town of Chōfu, a laid back suburb known for its temples and picturesque samurai quarter.
