Hagi 萩

A former castle town along the San-in coast in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Hagi is best known as a historic pottery center and for its numerous citizens that made a direct contribution to the Meiji Restoration and post-Edo period government. Long a stronghold of the Mōri clan, the city has retained a good deal of its historic streetscapes, with the old samurai districts of Jōkamachi and Horiuchi attracting many tourists.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints and - perhaps more critically - exhaustion from pedaling around in the heat and humidity, I missed the historic temples of Tōkō-ji and Daishō-in, the resting place of the Mōri daimyō. Next time, perhaps...
