Imabari-jō 今治城

Imabari, Ehime-ken, Japan view map

Imabari Castle was completed in 1604 by Todo Takatora after he was rewarded with land in Iyo Province for his service at the Battle of Sekigahara. Like Takamatsu-jō, Imabari-jō was famous for its use of seawater in its moat system, as well as for being set in a flat plain beside the sea. The original five-story donjon was moved in 1610 - only six years after its construction - to the site of Kameyama-jō in Kameoka (modern Kyōto Prefecture). The present ferro-concrete reconstruction dates from 1980. Several other smaller towers have also been rebuilt, most recently in 2007 when the Kurogane-gomon gate and guardhouse complex was completed using traditional techniques.
