One of Shikoku's four extant original castles, Marugame Castle dates from 1597, during the rule of Sanuki daimyō Ikoma Chikamasa. Most of the castle was gutted by fire in 1869, and the new Meiji government dismantled many of the remaining structures and filled in the outer moat the following year. The small three-story donjon survives intact today, however, along with a pair of original gates and the castle's substantial stone walls. Marugame-jō is one of several castles in Japan also going by the name of Kameyama Castle.
