The snake is a Biblical symbol, actually the snake and the pole together are the symbol. In Numbers 21:1-9, we have the account of the children of Israel in the wilderness following their deliverance from Egypt by the hand of God. But the people were discontented and in verse 4 their "soul was much discouraged because of the way", in other words, they were tired, depressed and unhappy. In verse 5, the people spake against Moses and God, blaming them for their hardship - they desired Egypt and bondage rather than freedom and a little discomfort, although God ALWAYS met their NEEDS! Because of their ungratefulness, God sent fiery serpents among the people, which subsequently bit the people and many died. The Israelites then repented of their sins and begged for forgiveness and mercy from God. God was faithful to do so and commanded Moses to make a brasen (brass) and put it upon a pole. All they had to do was LOOK at the brasen serpent upon the pole and that person would live! It's a beautiful picture of salvation - available to anyone who will believe that Jesus died on the cross for their sins, was buried and ROSE AGAIN the third day! You'll see this symbol on most ambulances today. How about you - have you put your faith and trust in Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins and salvation of your soul?

The snake seems a little weird on an apothecary shop sign.
