The Golden Orb Spider is found everywhere in the bush. They build webs from the trees to the ground that approach steel threads in strength. (They routinely catch insects, bats and small birds.) I am told they are harmless to people. Since they are about the size of a man's hand and since I am an amateur arachophobe, I was in a bit of a quandry during the entire trip. I had less of a concern with some major carnivores than I did with a six-inch spider. One did get into the Land Rover (note it is completely open) as we dashed across the veld to find the next stunning creature. It seems the Ranger and the Tracker and the Land Rover pay these eight-legged insects no mind at all. A safari outing typically runs through many, many of their webs, and occsasionally one drops into the Land Rover for a (brief) visit. I want to go back to Mala Mala for another visit, but I am considering waiting for the Golden Orbs to call a general strike. Luckily, my companions were all bush-veld veterans and had no problems with the Golden Orbs; they were also kind enough to let me have my occasional panic or fright with as much dignity as possible. (Thanks Geraldine, Peter, Gail and Adrian, this was a courtesy that will never be forgotten.)
