Mid-June found me in Alexandria, Virginia with a day just to wander. Alexandria is a beautiful city just 3 miles south of Washington, D.C.'s Reagan National Airport on the Potomac River. The city's "Old Town" area is packed full of wonderful treasures from the early days of the Republic. As I wandered I was amazed at the level of restoration of the 100 to 200+ year old buildings and the care the owners/residents as well as the local historical society take in preserving these beautiful examples of U.S. colonial architecture.
One thing that struck me was the variety of doorways and the unique beauty of each of them. I have seen many galleries dedicated to doorways in cities around the country. This may be just be another grouping of pictures by a fan of doors, or it just may prove to be a special gallery depicting the history, art and architecture of Alexandria, Virginia as reflected in the doors and passageways of "Old Town." I hope you enjoy 50 of The Doors of Alexandria.
