Located in Southern Africa just north of South Africa and Botswana, Zimbabwe maybe best known for the towering and very scenic Victoria Falls. Beyond the Falls though one will find it is a beautiful country with some wonderful scenic safari areas in a variety of landscapes, from desert sands and sparse woodland to grasslands and rocky outcrops. Unfortunately the long-running political turmoil has caused the country to become something of a safari backwater over the years. A few years ago however as the political environment stabilized safaris in Zimbabwe became more popular.

We had the opportunity to visit two of Zimbabwe’s game reserves and I would say a good safari here can make other countries seem rather tame by comparison. Here you will find a good variety of game chased by fewer tourists and less stringent rules. Particularly if you do some exciting walking safaris or spend some time buried under logs in a wildlife hide near a water hole for some up close and personal wildlife viewing.
Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s largest protected area is known for its huge herds of elephant and buffalo, and its healthy predator populations. Hwange also boasts one of the largest surviving populations of African wild dogs. Mana Pools National Park, a secluded wildlife haven on the Lower Zambezi floodplains that's home to great numbers of hippo, crocodile and diverse antelopes and other hoofed mammals. Zimbabwe is high on our list for another visit.
