As a result of Madagascar’s long isolation from neighboring continents it has become the home to many plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. A clear example of this is Madagascar’s Lemurs the island’s Flagship mammal species.
Lemurs while found no-where else in the world make up nearly half of the 240 different mammal species found in Madagascar. With 103 different Lemur species, Madagascar can be thought of as a primate hot spot. Found throughout nearly all regions of the island, Lemurs have adapted and evolved quite dramatically across Madagascar’s radically different ecosystems. Ranging from the Mouse Lemur the smallest primate in the world at under 4 ounces, to the Indri the largest of the Lemurs weighing in at up to 21 pounds. Throughout our “Wanderings” in Madagascar’s wilds we encountered over 15 different Lemur species some of which were very shy and elusive while others seemed very curious and comfortable with our presence.
