Iceland one of the most scenic lands we have visited is located at the juncture of the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans and is slightly is closer to continental Europe than to mainland North America. It is situated just south of the Arctic Circle at approx. 65’ N and 18’ W, northwest of Great Britain and east of Greenland. One of the youngest land masses on the planet and thereby one of the most volcanically active, Iceland has mostly rough, undulating terrain, consisting of mountainous lava deserts, plateaus and glacial ice fields, with a coastline deeply indented by bays and fjords. The coastline seemed to vary between wide expansive mud / sand flats, marsh land and high steep cliffs. The interior of the island contains very rough terrain with mountains and glaciers with lots of streams, creeks with many waterfalls. About 11% of the country covered by glaciers vs Greenland with 80%. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, Iceland enjoys a pleasant temperate climate compared to other places located so close to the Arctic Circle. The population of Iceland is approx. 325,000, half of which live near the capital, Reykjavik, the remainder of the country is sparsely populated.
