"When waxwings eat fruits of exotic shrub honeysuckles while molting their tail feathers, an unusual red carotenoid pigment (rhodoxanthin) in the fruit is deposited in the tail band, along with yellow carotenoids resulting in an orangish tail band.... Most affected waxwings are first-year birds fed fruits while growing their first tail feathers as nestlings during the summer." David Sibley
